Top 5 free agents in the 2023 summer transfer window

yq2o9dy8dobj.jpg

This summer sees the greatest crop of players testing their economic worth as free agents. The talent pool includes winners of the World Cup, Champions League, various domestic divisions and almost included the G.O.A.T. some players have not been included to this list because their futures are not officially known. For example, Lionel Messi is off to Miami, Marco Asensio is joining PSG and Konrad Laimer will be a Bayern Munich player. Veterans Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Edin Dzeko are also likely to remain at Real Madrid and Inter respectively.

1. ILkay Gundogan: The Manchester City captain rides off into the sunset with three shiny new medals around his neck after a memorable final season. He may be 32 but Ilkay Gundogan has played the best football of his career over the last two seasons and there won’t be a shortage of clubs wanting to sign him. City will be gutted to lose his leadership, all-round ability and big game goals - assuming he does not agree a new deal at the Etihad, of course.
2. Alessia Russo: Alessia Russo could have been the world’s most expensive women's player in January when Arsenal was interested. Six months later, she’s one of the biggest free agents on the planet.
3. Milan Skriniar: One of the best defenders in Serie A, Milan Skriniar has had a lot of clubs after him for some time. PSG have long been reported to have a deal with the Slovakia international tied up but nothing has been confirmed.
4. Ona Batlle: Described by Man Utd manager Marc Skinner as "the best in the world in her position", Ona Batlle reaches the open market with most of Europe’s top sides wanting her. The Spain full-back has a big offer on the table to return to Barcelona, but United hope she’ll sign on for their first attempt at Champions League glory.
5. Marcus Thuram: Twenty-five years old, a proven goal scorer in one of Europe’s top leagues and an assist in a World Cup final. You don’t get many players of that ilk available for nothing, which is why the market for Marcus Thuram is so busy. He’s coming off his best goal scoring season at Borussia Monchengladbach and can play anywhere in a front three.
