2023 Women’s World cup: England vs Nigeria

The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup continued Monday with England taking on Nigeria in the round of 16 at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Australia. The match was ultimately decided by a penalty shootout in which four clutch goals by England triumphed over Nigeria's two.

As if the shootout was not dramatic enough – the most memorable moment of the night came late in the match when England star Lauren James was ejected after receiving a red card for stepping on the back of Nigeria's Michelle Alozie. Her removal left England with only 10 available players as the match entered extra time. Her dismissal left England facing spot-kicks to avoid another massive shock at the tournament, which had already seen former winners USA and Germany eliminated early, along with Brazil. James will miss the quarter-final against on Saturday.

England survived a major scare to beat Nigeria 4-2 on penalties and sneak through to a World Cup quarter-final against Colombia or Jamaica following a goalless draw. Bethany England, Rachel Daly, Alex Greenwood and Chloe Kelly all scored in Brisbane as England survived the sending off of Lauren James in normal time to progress.

Georgia Stanway and Desire Oparanozie sent their opening sides penalties wide of the post before Michelle Alozie also missed the target for Nigeria to leave England in control. Outstanding goalkeeping from Nigeria's Chiamaka Nnadozie kept the Super Falcons in the game, but England was able to leave with a win and advance to the quarterfinals.
