The Origins of Ekpe Festival
The Ekpe festival traces its roots back to ancient times, long before the 17th century CE. The festival originates from the Ekoi tribe in Cross River State, Nigeria. It was formed from a private cult known as the Ekpe. The term “Ekpe” itself means Lion, and it symbolizes strength and power. This traditional secret society gained prominence particularly in Calabar and among the Oron nation of Udung-Ukko, Mbo, Urue-Offong Oruko, Okobo, as well as the Eket and Uruan local government areas in Akwa Ibom state, Nigeria, and western Cameroon.

Masquerades and Rituals
The Ekpe masquerades are the center of the Ekpe tradition as they represent both spirituality and cultural significance. In ancient times, the bearer of the masquerade was believed to be an invoked ancestor and it is a mystery to even members of the secret society. However, modern practices have shifted, with living individuals now undertaking the role after intense rituals and seeking guidance from ancestors through libation.
