In a landmark move, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is continuing to send refunds to Fortnite players affected by deceptive billing practices from Epic Games. In this latest round, the FTC is distributing more than $126 million to nearly one million players who made valid claims.
This follows an earlier refund round in December 2024, in which over $72 million was returned to more than 600,000 users. Combined, the FTC has now issued close to $200 million in refunds as part of its $245 million settlement with Epic, originally announced in 2022.
The FTC originally accused Epic of employing design tricks that led users—especially younger players—to unintentionally make purchases in Fortnite. These purchases were often hard to cancel or refund, prompting widespread consumer complaints and, eventually, government action.

For this second round, refund recipients selected either a mailed check or PayPal deposit when submitting their claims. The FTC has urged those receiving checks to deposit them within 90 days, while PayPal users should claim their funds within 30 days to ensure the refund isn’t returned.
What’s more, the FTC has reopened the claims process for a limited time. Players or their guardians who believe they were wrongfully charged but haven’t submitted a claim now have until July 9, 2025, to do so at www.ftc.gov/fortnite.
Epic has since implemented several changes to its purchasing interface and added improved parental controls to prevent similar incidents in the future. While the company has moved forward, this large-scale refund effort remains one of the most impactful legal outcomes in the video game industry.
As Fortnite continues to evolve, the ongoing refunds remind players that accountability in game development matters. The FTC's actions ensure that even the biggest studios are held to fair standards, particularly when it comes to younger audiences.
