What can make a wig look unnatural? My experience:

My first wig was when I graduated from college. I wanted to change my look for my graduation photos. The result was truly disastrous; it looked like I was wearing a hat. Looking back, I realized that some things can really make a wig look unnatural.

First, the color is too different from your natural hair color. I chose a brown highlight curly half wig, but my natural hair is darker. The boundary between my roots and the wig was very noticeable, making it immediately obvious that it was a wig. I've since learned that it's best to choose a color that's close to your hair color, or even go darker at the roots for a more natural transition.

Second, the hair is too shiny. Cheap synthetic wigs reflect light and look like plastic. I bought one of those, and it shimmered white in the sun, looking incredibly fake. Later, I switched to a human hair wig, and the texture is completely different: a softer sheen that feels more realistic.

Third, the top of the head is too puffy or too flat. If it's too fluffy, it'll look like a wig, while if it's too flat, it'll look untidy. I later learned to use a hairdryer and a comb to gently adjust the top of my head to create natural volume.

Another crucial factor is the hairline. If it's not done right, such as being too straight or too stiff, it can give the wig away. I now choose wigs with hand-crocheted hairlines, or even pluck a few strands myself with tweezers to create a sparser, more natural-looking hairline.

In general, the key to a natural-looking human hair wig is a close-fitting color, a realistic texture, a natural shape, and a delicate hairline. Looking back on that "accident," while a little embarrassing, it's these experiences that have made me more adept at choosing wigs today.
