Nigeria’s largest power generation company, Egbin Power Plc, has said it is committed to ensuring the power plant increases its electricity generation capacity by 100 per cent by the 2019.

Promoters of the project have said that their vision is to enhance the country’s economic growth and development through the creation of an industrial hub that would support industries with uninterrupted power supply.

The Chairman, Egbin Power, Kola Adesina, said on Tuesday in Lagos that the company’s industrial park projected for completion by 2019 would be designed to support small, medium and large scale enterprises and ultimately make Egbin town a hub of industrial activities.

Mr. Adesina said the Egbin power plant also has plans to double its electricity generation capacity to 2,670 MW.

“We are planning to raise the plants’ capacity by additional 1,350MW to the existing 1320MW to become 2,670MW by 2019,” Mr. Adesina said.

“We’ve started a plan now to double the capacity of the plant as well as implement a programme to make Egbin an industrial hub where companies can come in and set up their factories knowing that their businesses will be powered effectively and efficiently,” he stated.

He explained that prior to its privatisation, Egbin Power plant was in a deplorable situation, generating about 500MW.

The major problem for the poor performance of the, Mr. Adesina said, is it did not undergo any major overhaul in the past. Also, six units were not functional, while unit, in particular, had not worked in 10 years.

Mr. Adesina said since taking over the plant, the new management said it had rehabilitated all units, with Egbin currently generating 1,100MW.

He explained that Egbin power had since embarked on a feasibility study, Environmental Impact Assessment and the Front End Engineering Design and currently processing the Engineering Procurement Contract.

He said one of the main highlights of the company’s post privatisation achievements include the rehabilitation of ST Unit 6, which had been completely non-functional, in the first quarter of 2015. This restored an additional 220MW to the national grid. He said the company restored the power plant to its installed capacity of 1,320M.

In the area of human capital development, he said the company’s legacy and new staff have since embraced a renewed drive of professionalism, integrity and service excellence.

Egbin has employed 107 young engineers. These fresh graduates who have been exposed to sundry local and foreign training programmes are already learning receiving hands-on training that would prepare them for vital roles as power sector experts in the future.
