I first encountered wigs before a summer trip. I was fretting over how to manage my hair. Time was tight, the weather was hot, and I had to take photos. I knew my natural hair would be terribly frizzy in the heat and humidity. A friend recommended wigs, specifically the water wave and kinky curly styles, saying they were best suited to my 3C/4A hair texture and the easiest to create a natural look. So began my "curly wig exploration."
I initially bought a
kinky curly wig. Its tight, springy curls are almost indistinguishable from my own hair. Especially with the well-blended edges, it's hard to tell it's a wig. More importantly, it creates incredible volume, making my face look smaller in photos. I usually pair it with a headband or tie it up a bit in the front for a lively yet casual look.
Honestly, kinky curly wigs can be quite challenging to care for. Before waking up in the morning, you need to spray it with water or a moisturizing spray and then brush it back to restore its curls, otherwise it's prone to tangles. Long kinky curly wigs are particularly prone to tangling and dryness. So, if you're busy and don't want to spend time maintaining them, it might be a bit tiring.
Later, as summer heat intensified, I tried a water wave wig. Compared to a kinky curly, its curls are softer, more like the soft waves of a natural sea breeze, creating a natural, natural-looking curl. The advantage of this wig is that it's easier to care for and less frizzy. When damp, I can just brush it back for a natural, natural look, perfect for travel or when I'm not feeling up to the fuss of styling. The
water wave wig also has a softer style, which is a real plus when paired with a dress or a more mature look.
In summary, I think choosing between kinky curly and water wave really depends on your style and lifestyle:
If you prefer a more expressive look that emphasizes your natural curls and can handle a bit of maintenance, then kinky curly is definitely your first choice, especially for occasions where you want to express your style.
If you're looking for a more relaxed, casual look or are just starting out with wigs, then water wave is a better choice. It's easier to maintain and more versatile, perfect for almost any occasion.
