Sisters, your natural curls and coils look beautiful, but they really need to be taken care of! Otherwise, they'll tangle and break if you're not careful, making growing them long a chore. Here are a few tricks I've learned from countless mistakes—they're all easy to use and effortless!
First, don't mess with your hair! If your hair looks like a frizzy bird's nest when you wake up in the morning, don't use a fine-tooth comb to yank it hard—I've done that before, and I'd lose a bunch of hair and stamp my feet in frustration. Then I switched to a wide-tooth comb and started combing from the ends upwards, first untangling the lower tangles before combing towards the scalp. It's smooth and effortless without breaking. If the tangles are severe, apply some leave-in conditioner first as a lubricant—it's guaranteed to make combing much easier!
Next, when it comes to washing your hair, don't rub your scalp like you're washing your face! I used to scratch my scalp red and itchy because I was so eager to get it done quickly. Later, I learned that I need to gently rub it with my fingertips, like giving it a scalp massage. Also, avoid shampoo that leaves it feeling dry like grass. Look for one with shea butter or coconut oil, which leaves your hair soft and fluffy. And don't wash your hair too often—twice a week in the summer, once a week in the winter is enough. More than that strips away the scalp's natural oils, making it even brittle!
When I'm so busy I don't even have time to comb or style my hair, I now rely on
glueless wigs! I used to worry about wigs damaging my hair, until I tried these—no glue required, just a small comb and elastic band inside. Just slip it on and adjust the tension, and you're done! It's faster than braiding. When I wear them, I wrap my natural hair loosely in a hairnet. It doesn't suffocate my scalp, and it gives my natural hair a rest without the constant styling. For example, on Mondays, when I have an early morning shift, I put on the
Burmese curly wig I bought earlier. I get compliments on my shiny hair, and best of all, when I take it off at night, it's still smooth, not tugged at all!
Even sleeping requires careful attention to your hair! I used to use a cotton pillow, and by the time I woke up, my hair was windswept and frizzy. Then, following my friends' advice, I switched to a silk pillowcase, or loosely braided my hair or wrapped it in a silk cap before bed. A quick shake in the morning smooths it out, and I no longer have to spend half an hour untangling it. It's such a hassle!
Also, avoid using hot tools! In the past, I used to use straighteners and curling irons at high temperatures to keep up with the times. As a result, my hair became dry at the ends and broke easily. Now, unless I'm having an important event, I either let my hair run wild, spritzing it with a moisturizing spray at most. Or I use glueless wigs to change up my style. They don't require heat, and they protect my natural hair from heat damage—they're a true "godsend" for my haircare routine!
Finally, honestly, caring for your natural hair is like nurturing a plant; you have to take your time. These tips may seem simple, but sticking with them makes a real difference—my hair doesn't break as easily, and my ends aren't brittle anymore. Even a high ponytail looks fuller! Occasionally wearing glueless wigs changes up my style without sacrificing the natural hair's ability to rest. Ladies, give it a try too! Our natural hair is naturally beautiful, and it only shines brighter when we take good care of it!
