I once had a terrible experience wearing a wig improperly, which resulted in severe hair loss near my forehead. I've since figured out some methods that allow me to wear a wig without damaging my hair.
First, avoid using strong glue. Frequently pulling and ripping glue can be very damaging to your hairline, especially if you need to change your style daily. I later switched to a
glueless wig, secured with an adjustment strap and a small comb, which provides stability without pulling.
Second, learn to protect your natural hair. Before wearing a
wig, I usually braid my hair into cornrows or a flat, flat braid. This not only makes the wig fit better, but also reduces friction on your natural hair. At first, I was lazy and just put it on in a ponytail. As time went on, the hair at the back of my head tangled easily, and I lost a lot of it when I combed it.
Third, give your scalp time to rest. I've made it a habit to not wear a wig at least two days a week, using only a turban or styling my natural hair. This allows my scalp to breathe and my hair to recover.
I've found that by paying attention to these points, wearing a wig is completely effective in preventing hair loss. I even feel that it has helped me reduce the frequency of dyeing and perming, and my hair is healthier than before.
