Why I Love Both My Curls and My Wig Collection

Ladies, let's talk about something we all understand deep down, but often misunderstood by the outside world. In our community, hair is more than just hair. It's our history, our crown, and our most creative canvas. So, when I declare my love for both my vibrant natural curls and my dazzling collection of wigs, I'm talking about a whole, unbounded self.

This has never been a single-choice question, but a concerto of authenticity and transformation.

Act One: I Love My Curls, My Natural Crown
I remember the first time I truly embraced my natural curls. It wasn't a moment, but a journey—from trying to "tame" them with heat and chemicals to learning to use gentle care and listen to what each curl needs. When I stopped fighting them and began nurturing them with nourishing conditioners, natural butters, and essential oils, I touched more than just the texture of my hair.

What I touch is heritage. My curls, resilient, elastic, and infinitely varied, from tight coils to unrestrained spirals. They carry my genes, my bloodline, and the indelible beauty and resilience of my ancestors throughout history. In the morning, as I define my curls in the mirror and comb them into their desired shape with my fingers, I experience a profound sense of self-recognition. This love is an unconditional acceptance of my natural appearance, a personal and unwavering commitment to the truth that Black is beautiful.

These are my roots, my wild, untamed crown that requires no explanation.

Act Two: I also love my wig collection; it's my canvas for free expression.

However, loving my roots doesn't prevent me from yearning for the freedom of the sky. This is where my wig collection comes in.

My wigs aren't disguises, they're not covering up. They're the most creative accessories in my wardrobe. Advances in technology have taken this freedom to new heights. Take, for example, those glueless lace wigs—they're a true blessing in a busy life. No glue or complicated manipulation required; it attaches perfectly in minutes, giving me the realistic and comfortable feeling of a "second scalp." When I'm done with a long workday and want to look stunning for a dinner party, it's my secret weapon.

But there are also treasures in my collection that I particularly adore—like a wig meticulously crafted from Burmese hair strands. Its natural curls, with their springy yet wild beauty, simulate a perfectly natural, high-volume texture that instantly transforms me into a retro-inspired babe straight out of a magazine. This texture might look different on my natural curls, but here, it allows me to experience a beauty that transcends geography and genetics.

Today, I can be a retro goddess with Burmese curly wig; tomorrow, I can instantly achieve a smooth, shiny bob with a glue-free lace wig; next week, I might be trying a silvery afro. It's an unparalleled freedom. It frees me from the daily burden of grooming and protects my precious natural curls from the damage of over-styling. More importantly, it frees me to be whoever I want. My hairstyle is no longer constrained by time, hair quality, or the risk of chemical damage. Wigs are a privilege I've given myself—the right to define my own beauty, how I want, when I want.

This isn't a betrayal of my natural curls; on the contrary, it's a celebration of the limitless possibilities I possess as a Black woman.

Coexisting in Harmony: My Hair, My Rules
Some people wonder, "If you love your natural curls, why wear a wig?" or "Is a wig because you're not confident in your own hair?"

I would argue that this binary thinking is a trap. Why are we Black women constantly trapped in an either-or framework?

My natural curls are my essence, my foundation, and my source of strength.

My wigs (whether they're convenient glue-free lace or exotic Burmese curls) are my expression, my joy, and my wings of transformation.

Together, they constitute the whole of me. Loving both means I refuse to be constrained by a single definition. I can enjoy the casual freedom of "wash and go," the ease of choosing a glue-free wig in the morning, or dazzle everyone with the gorgeous curls of Burmese hair on the weekend. I can confidently wear my "fro" to a meeting on Monday, and radiate glamour with a Burmese updo on Friday—there's no contradiction.

This is our privilege. We are the heirs of this unique and resilient hair texture, and we have also created an incredibly rich and advanced hair culture. We can deeply explore the harmony between our natural curls and expertly express ourselves through art forms like wigs and braids.

So, my dear sisters, love everything about you without guilt. Love the wisdom of your curls, and love your collection of wigs filled with endless possibilities—whether it's the convenience of glue-free lace or the allure of Burmese curls. You don't have to choose; you can have it all.

Because whether it's natural curls or a wig, the hair we wear on our heads is our crown. And a true queen never limits herself to the style of her crown. You deserve to be all you are.
