If you had a superpower, but it only applies to everyday life, what would it be?

Hey sisters, have you ever had a morning like this? As you comb your fingers through tangled hair, you suddenly wish there was a way to keep your curls in place, without having to apply oil or wear that Burmese curly wig from the Gluelelss wigs series. Or perhaps, standing in front of a supermarket shelf, you see a foundation labeled "for light skin" and silently turn away, thinking, "If only every inch of dark skin could be treated with gentleness." If I had to choose a superpower that only applies to everyday life, I'd choose "making every ordinary moment fit our comfort"—not a magic trick that changes the world, but a gentle force that transforms life's little troubles into small joys.

This superpower hides in the mirror as we style our hair. It won't make curls straight, but it will help reduce the tugging of our morning hair, keep our braids fresh for days, and save us from having to frantically search for hairspray just because of a light rain. You know, our hair is a crown of pride, yet the time we spend tending to it always feels like a stolen gift—before dropping the kids off at school, between subway stops, late at night after working overtime. This superpower can help us turn a "trouble" into a "pleasure," allowing us to look in the mirror and play with our hair, revealing confidence, not fatigue.

It also hides in the sunlight as we step out. It doesn't alter the sun's temperature, but rather transforms those gazes that stare at our complexion into a gentle gaze. It allows the lighting in the fitting room to truly reflect the radiance of our deep brown skin, eliminating the need to wonder in the mirror, "Does this dress make me look darker?" Our skin is the color of the earth, a mark of sun. Yet, everyday life often presents its own awkward moments: repeated attempts at choosing foundation shades, and hesitations about wearing bright colors. This superpower can dispel these hesitations, allowing us to wear our favorite dresses or apply bright lipstick and simply feel, "I look great," without worrying about what others think.

More importantly, it stays with us during our busy times. When you've just put your child to bed and want a hot cup of coffee, it's cold; when you're alone on the subway after working late and feeling a little tired—this superpower will reheat your coffee, brighten the subway lights a little, and allow you to feel a little warmth even in those moments when no one is looking. We're always caring for others: our children, our families, our work, but we often forget to take care of ourselves. This superpower doesn't help us solve big problems, but rather helps us preserve those small moments of "me," reminding us that even in our busy lives, we deserve to be treated with kindness.

If you think about it, we already have these "superpowers"—the resilience to keep our lives organized every day, the courage to keep our heads up in the face of doubt, and the wisdom to find joy in the ordinary. If only there were a little more magic, I hope it could help us relieve some of the daily fatigue, bringing a little more ease to the moments like combing our hair, getting dressed, and sipping coffee. Our beauty doesn't need superpowers to prove it, but a little magic can make our daily lives less tiring and more relaxing. After all, every Black woman who lives her life to the fullest deserves life's gentle treatment.

Next time you're adjusting your curls in the mirror, or need a break from the hustle and bustle, consider this little superpower—it's hidden in the gentleness we show ourselves, in every moment of "living well."
