A MASSIVE fire yesterday erupted on a 24-inch pipeline believed to belong to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). The facility was also believed to convey crude oil to the Warri Refinery.

The pipeline laid a stone throw from the Army Barracks in Effurun, Uvwie Local Council, near Warri, Delta state.

Unconfirmed report said two persons were feared killed in the raging blaze when their residences were razed.

The fire, which began at about 3pm, enveloped the skyline of Effurun with billowing smokes.

It was learnt that no fire service had arrived the location three hours after.

A spare parts dealer, Godwin Jaikre in a chat said: “Everyone is worried. It is so sad that NNPC, Shell, Chevron and other oil firms have fire service units but up till 6pm this evening, none could send their officials to the pipeline fire scene to fight the fire. We are really alarmed as the fire is spreading from house to house.

Efforts to get reactions from the authorities at the Warri Refinery were futile as the Manager, Public Affairs neither took calls nor responded to text messages sent across.
