The first time I tried crochet hair, I honestly thought it would be one of those “quick install, no stress” styles. And to be fair, the install itself was pretty fast. But what I didn't expect were all the little things that came after.
For one, I didn't realize how much the base matters. My braids underneath were kind of bulky because I rushed them, thinking no one would see them anyway. Big mistake. The whole style ended up looking a bit… helmet-like. Not terrible, but definitely not the soft, natural look I had in mind.
Another thing? The weight. I went straight for a full, super curly look because it looked amazing online. But after a few days, my scalp was lowkey tired. It wasn't painful, just… heavy. Looking back, I should've gone for something lighter or at least not packed so much hair in.
Also, no one really told me how important it is to separate and fluff the curls properly. Right after installing, mine looked too “perfect,” almost wiggy. It wasn't until I started gently pulling the curls apart and giving it some shape that it finally started to look like my hair.
And then there's maintenance. I thought
crochet human hair was completely low-maintenance. Not exactly. You still have to take care of your scalp, keep it moisturized, and clean it every now and then. Otherwise, things get uncomfortable real quick.
If I could go back, I'd keep it simple the first time—lighter hair, neater base, and less volume. Crochet hair is actually super versatile, but it definitely has a learning curve. Once you get the hang of it though? It's a game changer.
