How I Fixed My Itchy Scalp After Installing Crochet Braids

I'm not even gonna lie—the first time my scalp started itching after getting crochet braids, I thought I just had to “deal with it.” Turns out, no. There are ways to fix it, and I wish I figured them out sooner.

The itching started around day two. At first, it was mild, but then it got to the point where I was constantly tapping my head trying not to scratch. Not cute.

The biggest issue? I didn't prep my scalp properly before installing. My hair was clean, but I didn't really think about soothing my scalp beforehand. Now I always make sure to wash, condition, and even use something calming (like a light oil or scalp serum) before braiding.

What really helped me fix it though was using a lightweight scalp spray. Not anything heavy—because that just builds up—but something that feels refreshing. I started applying it every couple of days, especially in the spots that felt the itchiest, and it made a huge difference.

Another thing I had to learn the hard way: don't install too tight. Some of my braids were pulling more than they should've, and that irritation just made the itching worse. Once I started going for a looser, more comfortable base, the problem basically cut in half.

Also, random but important—keep your nails out of it. Scratching feels good for like two seconds, then your scalp just gets more irritated. I switched to gently tapping or massaging instead, which helped way more than I expected.

Now, when I wear crochet human hair braids, itching isn't really an issue anymore. It's mostly about prep, lightweight care, and not overdoing anything. Simple stuff, but it makes all the difference.
