Summer Made Me Do It: Why I Switched to Bob Wigs

To be honest, I used to be the kind of person who was heavily attached to having long hair. I was especially fond of voluminous curls; I always felt that the more hair I had, the more secure I felt—and the more presence I seemed to have. But last summer really changed my perspective. As soon as the weather heated up, that heavy hair became almost a burden—especially the hair at the nape of my neck. It felt stifling, caused me to sweat, and tangled easily; sometimes, after a long day, the sheer frustration of it all would leave me completely irritable.

There were even a few times when my hair felt so thick and overwhelming that I couldn't be bothered to leave the house—an experience that was genuinely disheartening. That was when I finally started to seriously consider whether I should switch to a hairstyle better suited for summer, rather than blindly clinging to the style I was accustomed to.

The first time I tried a short bob wig, I actually approached it with a bit of a "settling" mindset, thinking it would just be a temporary transitional phase. But the moment I put it on, my immediate sensation was one of pure relief—it felt *light*. It was a truly palpable sense of lightness: my scalp felt unburdened, my neck was no longer swaddled in hair, and my whole self instantly felt much fresher and airier. Walking outside, I could feel the breeze directly on my neck—a sensation that is absolutely invaluable during the summer months.

As I slowly got used to wearing it, I began to notice details I hadn't considered before. For instance, a short bob actually gives you a much sharper, more polished look, and it helps define your facial contours more clearly. I particularly love the look of ends that curl slightly inward; in the sunlight, they look so clean, crisp, and full of vitality. Furthermore—especially for us Black women—this hairstyle holds up much better in high temperatures; it’s far less likely to have its overall shape and style compromised by sweat.

Looking back now, I’ve completely embraced this change. Every summer, I barely even consider wearing long hair anymore; instead, I reach straight for a trusty glueless bob wig. It’s not because it’s particularly "trendy" or "extraordinary," but simply because it offers the perfect solution to the most fundamental summer struggles: heat, weight, and high maintenance. Put simply, it’s so comfortable that you’ll find it hard to ever go back.
