How to Add Curly Hair to Braids Without a Crochet Needle

As for adding curly hair to braids without using a crochet needle—that’s a technique I truly had to figure out entirely on my own, starting from a place of having absolutely no idea what I was doing! When I first saw other people sporting this hairstyle, I always assumed that a specific tool was absolutely essential—that it simply couldn't be done without one. However, one day I had a sudden urge to try it out, but since I didn't have the necessary tool on hand, I decided to just bite the bullet and give it a shot anyway.

My initial approach was the simplest—albeit the most tedious—method: manually threading the hair through, bit by bit. I would gently loosen a section of the already-braided hair, slowly tuck the curly strands inside, and then tie them off to secure them. To be honest, this process really tested my patience; furthermore, my results weren't particularly uniform at first, but it certainly was possible to complete the look.

As I gradually gained proficiency, I began experimenting with more efficient techniques—for instance, using a bobby pin as a substitute for a crochet needle. I would first secure the curly strand to the bobby pin, thread it through the center of the braid, and then pull it out the other side. This method went much more smoothly and was noticeably faster. This little trick proved to be incredibly helpful for me, especially when I didn't have the proper tools available; it significantly boosted my efficiency.

If you're aiming for a more laid-back aesthetic—such as "boho braids and goddess braids"—that "handmade" quality actually works to your advantage. It makes the overall look appear more natural and organic—less rigid and perfectly uniform, and instead, full of character and charm. Of course, if you plan on styling your hair this way frequently, I would still highly recommend investing in a proper crochet needle for crochet hair; it really will save you a tremendous amount of time.

But at the very least, I’ve learned one thing: just because you don't have the specific tool doesn't mean the job can't be done—it simply means you have to go about it a different way.
