How I Bring My Crochet Curly Hair Back After Swimming

The first time I went swimming with crochet curly hair, I honestly thought I ruined it. After getting out of the water, the curls looked tangled, dry, and stretched in random places. I almost cut the style out the same week.

Now I know crochet curls can bounce back pretty well if you handle them gently afterward.

Before swimming, I usually braid the hair into two loose sections or put it into a low bun. If I leave the curls completely loose in the water, they tangle much faster, especially at the ends. I learned that the hard way during a beach trip last summer.

Right after swimming, I rinse my hair immediately. Chlorine and salt water dry the curls out fast if they sit too long. I don’t aggressively shampoo the hair every single time, but I always rinse thoroughly and squeeze out excess water with a towel. Rubbing the curls makes the frizz worse.

The biggest thing that helps me restore the curls is using mousse while the hair is still damp. Not too much — just enough to reshape the curls with my fingers. Sometimes I’ll separate larger clumps gently and twist a few sections around my finger to bring the curl pattern back. Human hair crochet responds especially well to this.

I also stopped using heavy oils after swimming. At first I thought oils would “fix” the dryness, but they mostly made the hair look weighed down and stringy. A lightweight leave-in spray works much better for curly crochet styles.

Usually by the next day, the curls look normal again. Some textures actually look better after water because the curls become softer and less overly defined. Water wave crochet hair and afro curly crochet hair especially give that natural vacation-hair look after swimming.

Swimming with crochet hair definitely takes extra care, but it’s still worth it to me. Summer feels a lot easier when I don’t have to stress about ruining my real hair every time I get near the pool or beach.
