What You Should Know About Cholera

With the recent flood crises in Nigeria, there has been a surge in the outbreak of cholera. As of September, the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) revealed that 149 persons died from cholera, out of 5, 451 suspected cases. And as of October, NCDC confirmed 10,745 cases, and 256 deaths in 31 states.

In the blog post, we will discuss everything you need to know about cholera. The causes, the symptoms, how it is treated, and how you can prevent yourself from contracting cholera.

What Is Cholera?
Cholera is a gastrointestinal disease ingesting food or water contaminated with the Vibrio cholerae bacteria. It affects both children and adults. It is an intestinal infection that can cause severe diarrhoea and vomiting.

When patients do not receive prompt treatment, the disease can be fatal, especially if it leads to dehydration, which causes a decrease in the amount of water and salt in the body.

Causes of Cholera
Cholera is caused by the ingestion of any food or drink contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. Infected persons typically experience an incubation period of between two and five days.

What are the symptoms of cholera?
The most common symptom of cholera is diarrhea. It is caused by massive loss of water and salt in the affected person's body. Other signs include vomiting, nausea, leg cramps, tiredness and dehydration.

The speed of onset of symptoms usually depends on the amount of Vibrio cholerae bacteria present in the body of the host.

How Is Cholera Treated?
Cholera can be treated with immediate administration of oral rehydration solution(a prepackaged mixture of sugar and salts that is mixed with 1 liter of water and drunk in large amounts). Severe cases also require intravenous fluid replacement. Antibiotics are also used in the treatment of cholera.

Prevention
A holistic approach is key to control cholera, and to reduce deaths. Some of the ways you can prevent yourself from contracting cholera are:
  1. Drink and use safe water
  2. Wash your hands regularly with soap and safe running water
  3. Cook food well, keep it covered, eat it hot, and peel fruits and vegetables.
  4. Use toilets
  5. Clean up safely
